Parenting Counseling: Getting on the Same Page
When you got pregnant, you were so excited to become parents together. It was so easy to assume that you were both on the same page about what you wanted: to raise healthy, happy, successful kids. Nowadays, it feels like you are on completely different pages about how to make that happen.
You both want the same outcome, but it feels like you are constantly fighting with one another about how to do it- and everybody is losing- including your kids. You can see the way your kids are driving a wedge between the two of you, breaking down your relationship, and putting your whole family into stress and turmoil.
You were raised very differently, affecting how you raise your kids, especially when they become adolescents. You have always been the disciplinarian; as it is now, you are the bad parent, and he is the good one. When you are disciplining the kids, he disagrees in front of them to make them appear as a “good parent.” Then you get into a fight in front of the kids, and they take the side of him to get what they want. The power struggle in your family has turned your kids into manipulative and mean individuals. It has also weakened your relationship and made you feel even angrier, resentful, disrespected, and alone.
You want to overcome this escalation of argument that gets ugly acting out. You want to learn to respond, not just react. You want to be on the same page when disciplining your kids. You need to feel his back when you need it. You need him to reinforce rules and not sugarcoat the problems. You have gotten to a point where you need help because you feel more of a willingness to let go and give up all of that, but you do not know how to do it by yourself.
It is possible to come together to parent as a happy team so as to raise happy, healthy, successful kids.
I will help you both understand what you want from parenting in your relationship and how to create strategies that work for your kids, you, and your relationship.
In a safe and nonjudgmental environment, you will improve your communication skills and learn what one needs from another to better develop your role as a parent.
My specialties working in couples therapy include premarital counseling, discernment counseling, and treatment for blended families.
